Ist eine Liebe, die lange währt, automatisch eine glückliche? Oder sind Langzeitpaare nur besser darin, Konflikte zu verdrängen? Wer nicht nur nebeneinanderher leben will, muss jedenfalls: reden.
Sind Langzeitbeziehungen automatisch glücklich und harmonisch?
Es gibt Paare, die es hinbekommen. Die schon ewig zusammen sind, zehn, zwanzig oder noch mehr Jahre, und die dabei auch noch glücklich wirken. "Wir neigen dazu, solche Paare zu idealisieren", sagt die Psychologin und Paartherapeutin Ursula Nuber. Menschen in Langzeitbeziehungen erscheinen uns wie Philemon und Baucis, das Vorzeige-Paar aus der griechischen Mythologie, das sich so innig liebte, dass es sich nur eines wünschte: zur selben Stunde zu sterben. Prompt verwandelt Zeus sie während ihres letzten Gespräches im hohen Alter in zwei Bäume.
Für alle, die mit ihrem langjährigen Gegenüber schon beim Kauf einer Zimmerpflanze in Streit geraten oder für jene, deren Beziehungen gar nicht erst mehrere Begrünungsperioden lang halten, kommt hier die Entlastung: Langjährige Zweisamkeit bedeutet nicht automatisch, dass ein Paar ein harmonisches Leben führt. "Langzeitbeziehungen sind nicht nur etwas Besonderes, sie bringen auch besondere Prüfungen mit sich", sagt Ursula Nuber. Viele Langzeitpaare leben irgendwann wie Geschwister oder beste Kolleg:innen zusammen, die als Arbeitsteam den Alltag organisieren.
Von leidenschaftlicher Beziehung zu freundlicher Routine
So wertvoll das ist, kann dabei anderes verloren gehen: etwa der Deep Talk über Gefühle, Ängste oder Träume. Auch Begehren und Intimität sind in Langzeitbeziehungen häufig nur noch eine ferne Erinnerung. "Die Sexualität schleicht sich oft davon", sagt Nuber. Im Laufe der Jahre wird der oder die andere zu einer Art Möbelstück, das zwar seinen festen Platz im Leben hat, aber keine Begeisterung mehr auslöst. Längst kennt man den anderen in- und auswendig – vom Lieblingswitz bis zur Mimik –, da muss man nicht mehr so genau hinschauen und -hören. Im schlechtesten Fall rollt man sogar mit den Augen: "Das schon wieder!" Auf diese Weise erodieren Beziehungen, sie werden langweilig oder eben freundliche Routine. Stück für Stück, Jahr um Jahr.
Die Beziehung hinterfragen?
Anders als Paare, die von Anfang an so viel streiten, dass sie sich meist früher wieder trennen, ist die Schieflage bei solchen freundlich abgenutzten Beziehungen sehr stabil. Es braucht einen größeren Impuls von außen, um den Wunsch nach Veränderung auszulösen. Ein neuer Job, die Genesung nach einer schwereren Krankheit oder ein runder Geburtstag können ein Weckruf sein. Oder die Trennung eines befreundeten Paares. Scheidungen sind tatsächlich ansteckend: Lässt sich ein:e gute:r Freund:in scheiden, erhöht sich das Risiko, dass auch die eigene Ehe in die Brüche geht, bis zu 75 Prozent.
Mit dem Blick auf die anderen wird die eigene Selbstverständlichkeit hinterfragt, die Fassade gerät ins Wanken. Man schaut besonders intensiv auf seine Beziehung – und stellt möglicherweise fest, dass schon länger vieles fehlt. Aufmerksamkeit zum Beispiel. Oder Inspiration und Wertschätzung. Wie sagte bereits Konfuzius? "Der Mensch hat zwei Leben. Das zweite beginnt, wenn er erkennt, dass er nur eines hat."
Für immer und ewig – oder auch nicht!
Die Therapeut:innen Anna Finne-Teschke und Dieter Teschke von der Norddeutschen Paarakademie in Hamburg berichten, dass vor allem Paare im mittleren Alter zu ihnen kommen. Diese stecken meist in einer Übergangsphase, die sich zur massiven Krise entwickelt hat. "Die Familiengründung ist fortgeschritten oder abgeschlossen. Beruflich hat sich geklärt, wo es hingeht. Das Paar hat lange Zeit Seite an Seite auf das Dritte geguckt, auf die Kinder, den Hausbau, die Karriere. Nun schauen sie wieder in Richtung Partner:in: Oh, du bist ja auch noch da! Die Beziehung kommt wieder mehr in den Blick mit der Frage: Was wollen wir jetzt noch miteinander? Wollen wir überhaupt noch?"
Dass selbst Langzeitbeziehungen kein Garant mehr für "immer und ewig" sind, liegt daran, dass heutzutage vor allem die Gefühle und die Beziehungsqualität den Laden zusammenhalten. Die Liebe muss alles schultern. Äußere Zwänge wie gesellschaftliche Normen oder finanzielle Abhängigkeit spielen bei der Entscheidung "gehen oder bleiben" kaum noch eine Rolle.
Ja, auch eine Trennung kann eine Lösung sein. Oft eine bessere, als zu verdrängen, passiv zu erdulden und resigniert zusammenzubleiben. Die interessanteste Lösung ist wohl aber, die gute alte Beziehung noch mal neu anzugehen: Mut zur Klärung zu finden, neue Nähe zu wagen, Verletzungen zu verzeihen – und miteinander zu reden. "Es geht um die Kunst, wesentlich zu werden", sagt Ursula Nuber. Wenn beide berichten können, was sie wahrnehmen, erleben und sich wünschen, eröffnet dieser Kontakt neue Räume und Verbindungen.
Viele Wege führen zur Zufriedenheit
Zugegeben: Nach all der Zeit noch einmal aus der Paar-Routine auszubrechen, ist leichter gesagt als getan. Es kann sich ungewohnt oder befremdlich anfühlen. Und das eigene Verhalten kritisch zu hinterfragen ist sowieso ein großer Angang. Damit es gelingt, braucht es die Bereitschaft, noch einmal in ein Miteinander zu investieren – und damit Zeit, eventuell eine Paartherapie, auf jeden Fall aber psychische Anstrengung. Welche Pfade man dabei beschreiten muss, ist ein individuelles Abenteuer. Ein Paar muss zum Beispiel lernen, besser mit Druck umzugehen, während es für ein anderes darum geht, alte Wunden zu heilen. Sicher ist: Viele gemeinsam verbrachte Jahre sind eine perfekte Ausgangsbasis für die Reise zu einem neuen Miteinander.
